Boys team make it to District Playoffs

Recently, the Sizer School Varsity Boys Soccer Team reached the district playoffs for the first time in school history after posting a 10-6-2 season record. The team only gave up 44 total goals in the season.

The team, led by senior captain and defender Chris Zanni of Leominster and senior captain and forward Donny Crowley of Fitchburg had an amazing season, which ended November 3 following a hard-fought battle against Parker School. Sizer fell 4-0 to Parker but not before giving the Parker defense a run for their money.

Donny Crowley was named MVP for the season, having scored 44 of the 70 total goals scored and had 10 assists.

“First-year player Davi Dias [of Fitchburg] was a huge addition [to the team] as an 8th grader. His immediate impact was a key part in making the playoffs,” according to Athletic Director Timothy Sargent.

Walker Peters of Hubbardston, junior and one of the captains has continued to be a key contributor to the success of this team. The team will look to Walker to lead the way next season as a senior and captain.

Walker, Zanni, Crowley and Dias all earned the honor of being named WCAC All Stars.

“The WCAC is the Worcester County Athletic Conference and they were voted in by the coaches in the league,” said Sargent.

The Sizer School Girls Varsity Team finished the season at 6 wins and 12 loses. This season will be remembered as a great year for seniors/captains/all stars.

“Angie Welch [of Fitchburg], Senior/captain earned the honor of WCAC all star for her play all over the field. She was a problem for the other team wherever she was. She was outstanding in net as a goalie and played a fair amount on offense and defense,” said Sargent. “Anna Pettirossi [of Hubbardston], Senior/captain was has been one of the most consistent players in her years at Sizer. She was huge on offense and defense.”

Sargent went on to say Stephanie Montanez of Fitchburg stepped up as a sophomore to boost the team in the midfield.

“She was a key part of many goals and valuable on defense as well. Claire Petersen of Hubbardston, Senior/captain and now MVP has been so much fun to watch during her Sizer career. She influences the game so much when she is on the field.”

Petersen finished her senior year a captain, a WCAC All-Star and the team MVP. These four athletes were well-deserving of WCAC all stars honors.
